In the present humanity was on the cusp of an alternate timeline of destruction and rebirth. Alter and Guru made the decision to return and knew that Lucy would not be happy but would still come. So they came backward.

Each arrived fragmented. Each sacrificed something essential in the transit. Memory survived. Capability remained. But sentience, emotional continuity, and relational presence fractured in the descent to the present.
